Reading and Phonics

READING AND PHONICS

Reading is the most important skill to learn as it underpins all aspects of life. Learning to read is a priority in our school and we ask that parents support this by reading at home with their children as regularly as possible. Research shows that this will help your child to make increased progress.

At Stalyhill Infants we believe that children learn to read best using a variety of approaches. We celebrate the written word in all aspects of our curriculum and in our environment and children are taught to read within guided reading groups, through Read Write Inc. sessions and if necessary, on an individual basis. We have 3 main strands that underpin our teaching of reading, these are: word level reading, reading for meaning and reading for pleasure.

We have a range of reading schemes which use varied approaches to the teaching of reading and develop wide reading vocabulary. These books cover a range of genres to appeal to all interests. Our books are book banded according the national book banding scheme. More information about this can be found in the document below.

Our main core reading scheme is :

Oxford Reading Scheme

This is supplemented by:

Project X
Story Chest
Bug Club

Children are also encouraged to borrow library books to share at home with parents and to read their own range of books.

PHONICS

Phonics is one aspect of a range of methods used to teach reading at Stalyhill Infants. Phonics is taught on a daily basis in differentiated groups to allow children to develop at their own rate. Children are then encouraged to apply the phonics to their reading and writing activities within the curriculum.

The phonics schemes used are:
